Andre, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
At Rios Bollinger Law, my purpose is clear: to secure justice for my clients. It all started with a rite of passage – earning my driver’s license. On my 16th birthday, I was thrilled to pass my driving test, excited for the freedom it promised. That night, I took a car out with friends, not realizing the taillight had a temporary fix with red tape. Unfortunately, driving through a city that felt worlds apart from where I lived, I was pulled over. Instead of a simple ticket, I was interrogated, judged not by my actions but by where I came from. It was a frightening, demeaning experience that left me questioning my place and my worth.
But that encounter became a turning point. Refusing to accept a wrongful ticket and the fear it imposed, I sought guidance, learned my rights, and found my way to court – standing up for myself at just 16. That day, although my case was dismissed when the officer didn’t appear, I walked out changed. I felt the impact of injustice, and it left a mark that eventually led me to law school and, ultimately, to founding my firm.
Today, my journey continues as I empower others to face their challenges head-on. Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
In law school, I was taught that as a lawyer, my role was to know what’s best for my clients and direct them accordingly. However, real-world practice has taught me something far more valuable: my clients already know what they truly need. My job is to guide them toward achieving it.
By taking the time to genuinely understand my clients and listening to their goals, I can craft a strategy tailored specifically to their unique situation.
Sometimes, that means standing up to powerful opponents—whether it’s prosecutors, insurance companies, or major corporations. Other times, it’s about telling my client’s story in a way that resonates and compels others to see their perspective.
Regardless of the approach, one principle always guides me: doing what’s best for my clients.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I feel incredibly fortunate that the majority of my new clients come from referrals, both from my clients and fellow attorneys. For my clients, my approach is simple: focus on delivering excellent work and providing real value. While that’s not always easy, the principle is straightforward and guides everything I do.
What has surprised me most is how many referrals I receive from other attorneys. Even in a competitive field, I’ve learned that collaboration often outweighs competition. I freely share my knowledge because I know the unique connections I build with my clients can’t easily be replicated. As a result, other attorneys recognize my expertise and often turn to me with their questions.
When they encounter a case outside their area of focus, they frequently refer the client to me instead of taking on the added complexity themselves. I do the same for attorneys whose expertise complements mine. This mutual exchange not only simplifies our work but also ensures clients receive the best possible support, leaving everyone more satisfied in the process.
